Tuesday, May 25, saw a rare event in the Gorbals area of Glasgow, write Stephen Eric Smyth and Gerry Fitzpatrick. Children from St Francis’s primary school and Blackfriars primary school walked through their local streets together, proudly carrying school banners, song sheets and a smile, heading for their waiting bus. The group of 40 children were heading to St Mungo’s cathedral in Townhead, jointly representing the Gorbals, to sing a cantata called Ninian with hundreds of other children from across Glasgow.

The venture was the first success of “Givin’ it Laldie”, a new community music initiative.
