Jake Clegg, 11, won awards in national karate contests

Karate enthusiast Jake Clegg has won gold and bronze medals in the Karate Council’s National Championships, writes Simon Carter.

The Year 7 pupil attends St Ambrose College in Cheshire. He won gold in the team event and bronze in the individual Kata sections.

Jake, 11, from Heaton Norris, Stockport, will now represent England in the world Championships in Cadiz later this year for the second year in succession.

Jake is a specialist in Kata sequences, which are rehearsed acrobatic moves and sparring fights.

Jake said: “You need to be strong, have good balance, great confidence, and natural agility plus the ability to breathe deeply through each of the exercise routines.

“I think karate builds confidence and self-control and I have really enjoyed seeing how much better I can get if I work hard over the last three years.”

Michael Thompson, St Ambrose College headmaster, said: “It’s a great achievement to represent your country and we hope Jake will continue to develop all his skills.”

Wow! I was really surprise. This kid Jake Clegg is amazing. At his young age, he’s already a  gold and bronze medalist in the Karate Council’s National Championships. That’s really great.
