A British dance troupe has been invited to perform at World Youth Day in Madrid.

More Than Dance, a company which uses dance to preach Gospel values, took part in the Hyde Park vigil during the Pope’s visit and has been invited to perform in Spain.

The group needs to raise £10,000 in order to take the young people to Madrid. Kevin Atkinson, the director of More Than Dance, said the opportunity to perform in Spain was “another great honour and unbelievable chance for the young people to be able to share their faith in a really creative way”.

Mr Atkinson described More Than Dance’s performance at the Hyde Park prayer vigil during the papal visit. The corps took along 28 young people from the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle, who volunteered to perform. He added: “On the Saturday everyone was up early and as we made our way to Hyde Park the excitement grew as the crowds became bigger and noisier, singing and shouting for the Pope (or was that just us?)

“Backstage we met up with Bishop Seamus, Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle, and then the young people were called onstage for the first dance ‘In the Light’ by the group DC Talk. This was early on in the day, to a crowd of about 30,000 people – a big ask of any young people. We pulled the performance section of the event to a close with two dances.”
