St Joseph’s College young rugby players are celebrating a county double as they mastered both the 15-a-side game and the shorter form of sevens in an end-of-season finale.

The senior under-18 squad won the county sevens beating derby rivals Newcastle under-Lyme School 19-17 in a thrilling semi-final, before turning the tables on King Edward’s Litchfield 36-12, having been beaten 24-17 in the group stages.

The under-14s similarly beat Newcastle in the semi- final with a 40-0 fluid display before beating King Edward’s 15-5 in the final.

Rick Christopherson, St Joseph’s College assistant headteacher and rugby coach, said: “King Edward’s Litchfield is a particularly strong rugby school and we were delighted to win both finals against traditionally tough opposition. It was also good to see St Joseph’s sides mastering both forms of the game. In sevens you need to keep the ball alive, avoid contact and move it quickly – always playing with your head up to see and move into the space.”
