Archbishop Vincent Nichols of Westminster has appointed Mgr Vladimir Felzmann as Catholic chaplain for sport for the Diocese of Westminster.

Mgr Felzmann’s responsibilities will be to ensure that the diocese is able to respond to the challenges and opportunities of the Olympic Games taking place in London in 2012. The role will also include working with the newly formed John Paul II Foundation for Sport, launched by Pope Benedict XVI during his visit to Britain in September 2010. Mgr Felzmann will also remain as the Catholic chaplain to Canary Wharf.

James Parker, Catholic Executive Coordinator for the 2012 Games, said: “Fr Vladimir Felzmann is the right man to ensure the Catholic community takes seriously any legacy of sports ministry following the 2012 Games. His extensive experience of working with young people, added to his intimate knowledge of London and its varied communities, puts him in a strong position in the starting blocks.”

Mgr Felzmann was previously at the All Saints Pastoral Care Centre in Hertfordshire, which closed in February.
