Archbishop Antonio Mennini, the Apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain, visited Sacred Heart school in Camberwell, south London, on Sunday May 15, to preside at a Mass and to bless the renovated parish and sixth form centre.
Archbishop Mennini was accompanied by Mgr Brian Udaigwe, First Counsellor at the nunciature. Serge Cefai, headteacher, and other teachers were present, along with Year 11 students who will be entering the new sixth form.
During the ceremony the nuncio gave Fr David Gibbons, the parish priest, a medal commemorating the papal visit to this country.
The renovated centre has been a joint project between Sacred Heart parish, which will use the facilities for catechetical classes and parish group meetings at weekends and in the evenings, and Sacred Heart school, which will use the centre during the day for their new sixth form.
The Sacred Heart school was the second best performing school at GCSE level in the country during the last academic year, out of approximately 3,000 schools in its category.
Fr David Gibbons is about to leave Sacred Heart parish after nearly 11 years because he has been appointed director of the archdiocesan Christian Education Centre.
