Fr Charles Briggs celebrated his silver jubilee of ordination to the sacred priesthood on Tuesday August 2
Father Briggs is parish priest of the historic church of St Mary’s, Chislehurst, south-east London, and archivist for the Archdiocese of Southwark. He celebrated his jubilee with a High Mass of Thanksgiving at St Mary’s.
Fr Briggs was assisted by Fr Timothy Finigan as deacon and the Rev John Harrison as subdeacon.
Archbishop Emeritus Kevin McDonald of Southwark assisted with the choir and preached. Fr Briggs was joined by a large number of priest friends from the archdiocese and beyond and was further assisted by eight altar servers from the parish who did a splendid job serving High Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.
The Cantores Missae choir sang Byrd’s Mass for Four Voices, Byrd’s Ave Verum and Victoria’s Veni Creator Spiritus. The Mass concluded with a solemn Te Deum in thanksgiving for 25 happy years of priesthood.
Fr Briggs was ordained by Bishop John Jukes in August 1986 and has served in Tunbridge Wells, Lewisham, West Croydon, the London Oratory and at St Mary’s.
