Pope Francis led millions of Catholics around the world in an hour of Eucharistic adoration on Sunday (video).

The Pope condemned what he called a “plague of kidnappings” in Syria in his Angelus address (full text, video).

War is “an act of faith … in idols of hatred, in the idol that leads to killing one’s brother“, the Holy Father said at Mass yesterday.

On Friday the Pope greeted 22 children suffering from cancer at his residence (video).

Fr Ray Blake wonders if the Holy See’s pavilion at the Venice Biennale is worth €750,000 ($974,000, £641,000).

And American atheist Bill Maher has claimed that Pope Francis “may not be” a Catholic.

Valued at but hardly worth it; yet all fogies young and old – it would seem – simply don’t get it, dude, it’s all about Now, man, forget all the failed orthodoxies of the past, pops, live with the experience of the moment, for The Times They Are A-Changin’, daddio; so tie-dyed, faux ethnic, DIY and disposable “feeling” is the essence of being “church” today, as all hipsters young and old – being part of the In Crowd – “know” .. therefore we all just have to get on with rediscovering the joyous liberating spirit of Bauhaus architecture, Stalinist building plans, and regurgitated Pop Art poster taste (and jolly well like or lump paying for it): even it it does capture the immanent judgement of salvation at a Mithraic den and the redemptive quality of the industrial Rave set in your own living room rather than the rational worship of the Living Lord our God as His one body with one Spirit.

Now, this slightly sad piece of news – merely tinged with a selfish grief for a beloved nephew and family heading off to do other things .. and knowing we’ll miss his lively, challenging, sarcastic self in our own comfort-zone .. but realizing, in fact, he has only moved down the road – well, I for one see in him and his witness (and all those like him) a great hope for The Radical Life of living out the Faith (on the e-world and in the real one with joy for the next).

Perhaps the next step for Bill Maher, resident Atheist correspondent, is to set up a double blind controlled trial, with out of contact controls, fully randomised,to test the hypothesis that Pope Francis may not be a Catholic. The null hypothesis being there is no difference between the statements of Pope Francis and the average Atheist.
His statement that the Pope may not be Catholic shows he has not understood what it means to be a Catholic.Someone who believes in a just God who looks into the heart of everyone and who draws them to Him, even through Atheism.
