If the Church were to fail “to bring Jesus” it would be “a dead church”, Pope Francis said at his general audience this morning (short video, full video).

The justice system punishes “the small fry” but lets “the big fish swim free in the water”, the Pope has told Italian prison chaplains.

The whistleblower at the heart of a crisis in the American Archdiocese of St Paul and Minneapolis has said she “didn’t do enough” to protect the vulnerable.

John Thavis and Fr John Zuhlsdorf comment on Archbishop Gerhard Müller’s L’Osservatore Romano article insisting that divorced and remarried Catholics should not receive Communion.

Simeon Tegel says a series of clerical abuse scandals has left Latin Americans “wondering what’s really changed in the Vatican”.

Jerry Ryan is puzzled by a Russian icon depicting Pontius Pilate as a saint.

And Andrew Sullivan hails Mother Antonia, the twice-divorced “saint” who left Beverly Hills to live in a Mexican prison.

‘If the Church were to fail “to bring Jesus” it would be “a dead church”, Pope Francis said at his general audience this morning (short video, full video).’

It other words, Holy Father, I trust you mean that ‘God’ would appear to be dead (as indeed He may as well be to all too many inside the Church as outside it). The Catholic Church being the Lord our God, Jesus Christ, Mary’s divine Son, in Person .. not an assemblage of like minded ‘god’-type churchy/ non-churchy/ no churchy people .. does not become ‘a dead church’, it cannot, even in rhetoric; the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Yes, indeed, the Blessed Ever Virgin Mary is the true and divinely demonstrated model of this charity, a love that Christ seeks to perceive in all the members of His own body, enlivened as it is by the Holy Ghost; in her witness she did not seek to dialogue about that reality, she received it, accepted it and delivered it .. even to the unborn babe leaping in her cousin’s womb .. and continues to do so in her heavenly prayers for us all.

‘Mary’s faith is the fulfilment of Israel’s faith, the entire journey, the entire journey of the people of faith, waiting for the redemption is concentrated in her, and in this sense she is the model of faith of the Church , which is centred on Christ , the incarnation of the infinite love of God’

God bless our Pope .. and preserve him from misinterpretation (not least by me)!

A touch of the spirits; the Holy Ghost and the world – just like the rest .. God have mercy on us all (we belong to the One forever but must live amid the other’s rule for a while)!
