The model who gave up Chanel for a life of prayer

Model and TV presenter Ania Golędzinowska tells Paolo Gambi why she left the world of glitzy celebrity for Medjugorje

Ania Golędzinowska: ‘I left Italy without telling anyone’

Ania Golędzinowska: ‘I left Italy without telling anyone’

As Silvio Berlusconi grapples with the greatest crisis the Italian republic has ever seen, a member of his extended family has gone on a long retreat to Medjugorje. Ania Golędzinowska, the Polish girlfriend of Paolo Enrico Beretta, the Italian prime minister’s nephew (he is the son of Silvio Berlusconi’s late sister, Maria Antonietta), has moved to the town in Bosnia and Herzegovina to lead a life of prayer.

How did you end up in Medjugorje?

The first time I was invited by a friend who also paid for the trip. I had a sort of an allergy for priests and the Church. But that first trip changed my life, so much so that for the following two years I was no longer able to live serenely, because I realised that I had never been really happy in my entire life. What I was living was an illusion, not true happiness. I became depressed. I had a privileged life that I no longer liked. Instead, I wanted simple, normal things. One morning I woke up, called a friend and asked him to find me a place to stay in Medjugorje – or I would have jumped out of the window. I left Italy with two bags without telling anyone. And here I am.

How long have you been in Medjugorje and when are you going to come back to Italy?

I’ve been here almost three months. Actually, my first thought was to come here just for a few days, because on June 25 I should have started a PR job in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, at the billionaire Flavio Briatore’s club. But June 25 was also the 30th anniversary of the apparitions in Medjugorje. After five days here I terminated the contract and have decided to remain. I am in a Marian community and I live with priests and nuns.

How do you spend your day?

I wake up at five in the morning. We climb the mountain Podbrdo to recite a rosary, then we go down, we have prayers, then Holy Mass. Until noon we work. I clean the rooms and bathrooms, then I do the ironing, or peel potatoes. We also have a vegetable garden and chickens. After that we recite another rosary. In the afternoon we rest, then at six there are other prayers.

You’re spending the summer in a place of prayer, far enough away from everything and everyone. Don’t you miss Formentera, Sardinia and other places like that?

Absolutely not. Many of my old friends cannot comprehend what I am doing. They don’t understand how I can be happy doing what maybe my cleaning lady did before. In fact, I think I have never been so happy. I feel like when I was a child, when I was little and I lived with my poor and simple family. Everything
I do makes me feel satisfied. I feel loved by God and by those around me, without having to disguise myself by what I have never been. I know that people are close to me for who I really am, not for profit. I left everything. I get dressed with the “clothes of Providence”, which sometimes the pilgrims leave here, because my clothes did not fit in Medjugorje. I could not come here wearing Chanel shoes…

What was the reaction of your boyfriend, Paolo Enrico Beretta?

At first he was shocked. For almost two weeks he did not know where I was. We met again a month later, when I returned to Milan to terminate the lease of the house and to sell the car: I decided to move permanently to Medjugorje. We met, we talked a lot and he understood my choices. He told me he respects them and that he will always and in any case be close to me until I will be ready to come back. And he knows very well that this can happen in a year as in four. Meanwhile, he is preparing to visit me. Now I do what the Lord wants from me. If the Lord wants me to come back, I shall come back to Italy. But I do not think this will happen in the near future.

In the newspapers we read that you have chosen chastity. Again, one would wonder if your boyfriend welcomed your choice.

He is perhaps the only man who has always respected me. We have had a chaste relationship, even though we have known each other for three years. Maybe that’s why our relationship is so deep. I decided to create an association “pure hearts” for those who have chosen to live in chastity until marriage, respecting God and themselves. As a sign recognition there are numbered rings for all members.

Why do so many people in the Italian showbusiness world go to Medjugorje?

I don’t know. Some do it for advertising, but there are also those who really need to find answers. In the end we are all people, and newspapers usually don’t tell stories about regular people. I believe that today’s world urges us to seek the truth, because we live in a false reality.

Where did your story begin?

It’s a long story and I have written about it in the book Con occhi di bambina (“Through the eyes of a child”). It begins when I was a little princess who dreamed of a castle and of her prince, but I found myself kicked out of the enchanted castle when I was four years old. I had to struggle with insincere people, harassment, abuse, drugs and much else besides.

It’s reported that in 2008, wearing just a bikini, you came out of a cake donated to prime minister Silvio Berlusconi and sang “Happy birthday” to him. After Medjugorje would you do that again?

After Medjugorje I would not do many things, but I do not regret anything. I had to live the good and the bad things of my past in order to give testimony today that you can change, that real life is something else. Jesus came and died for sinners, not for healthy people. I am the first of sinners. I do not want to lose the privilege of enjoying the mercy of the Lord.

From parties, perhaps with cocaine, to Our Lady… Do you think you want to escape from the world?

I have had nothing to do with drugs for about six years. I do not want to escape from the world, I know that the real battle is out in everyday life. But first I have to heal my soul to help others, to fight in the battlefield for the only true King, who is God.

From Medjugorje what do you want to tell our readers?

Three things: love, forgive and do not judge. Just as you want to be forgiven, also others have the right to a second chance. Forgive, but do not do it for others: do it for yourself. You must empty the hatred and the resentment that you hold in your heart. Only then can God work in you. Otherwise he has nowhere to put the graces that he has reserved. If you decide to come to Medjugorje do not expect to see the sun spinning or other miracles. The real miracle is your departure. Our Lady will take care of all the rest.
Open your heart.

She is 100% correct. Most of the entertainment and media people are living a false life. They are being what the world expects them to be and not who they really are.
There is a saying that is true. “In every heart, there is a space that can only be filled by God”. All the pleasures of the world cannot fill that space. That is why there are suicides, drugs and alcohol, multiple divorces and relationships that don’t last. Ania has realized that and gave Him His rightful place in her life. That doesn’t mean she can’t have a good rfelationship with her boyfriend in the future. When God is in the equation than all relationships come into true balance.

Your story is amazing. You’re right, the world is nothing–only Jesus matters. True  love and true happiness comes from God. Ad St. Teresa of Avila said, ” GOD ALONE SUFFICES.

I would do anything to live in Medjugorjie. I however am in a covenant marriage with my husband who is a lukewarm Catholic. My first allegiance is to my marriage, but I would do anything to experience living the simple, prayerful life in the spirit of devout Catholics in that precious little village. Visited five times and became a 1st century Christian…

Yes, Our God is a God of Surprises, He calls those that are least likely to be the “chosen ones”, God is a God of Love, who shows us that He is a Mystery and Myster to be Lived and Loved,

A few other’s out there have also followed suit, and heard His Calling to pray, believe ,and go forth and tell the world…such asItalian singer, Nek , Lola Felani, and Boston singer songwriter, Monica Ursino, these are but a few Their stories are quite interesting and inspirational also.

From the life of Glamour and Glitz, to the hard road.. God can do everything, all he needs from us is an opening in our hearts that he can work with.  Wonderful Wonderful story.

My husband and I went to Medjugorje this past summer.  It has been a life altering experience.  Our Lady is calling us to prayer and to live a simpler life.  It is very hard to do but with God’s help and Our Lady’s help this is possible.  This is a great article, I will pray for Ania and I will pray even harder that the youth will hear her message about chastity.

I get what you are saying, would be there with you too, have wanted to live there since my first pilgrimage in 1990 but I am also married.  I absolutely love the phrase “I became a first century Christian.”

There is no doubt in my mind that something real is going on in Medjudgorje.  Perhaps it is because living in the world today is like being in the end of the world novel.

    Good article.

This story is a true testament to what Medjugorie is, these stories are the real miracles, thanks be to God. Bless this woman’s choice, may she always be close to Jesus and Mary.

Some sound advice around forgiveness.  We are more likely to be able to forgive if it is in our best interests to do so.  I hope this does not sound inward looking or selfish just the reality of human weakness.  Frank

  • Paula

Frank,  Ania has shown a great kindness in sharing her journey. Kindness is one of the most attractive assets of the human race. The love of Our Lady and Our Lord Jesus are paramount in her life.
To quote St. Bernard of Clairvaux, “What we love we shall grow to resemble.”

  • Diahann Dy

I pray that many more will have the conversion that Ania did and indeed you are to be credited too for cooperating with grace. God can only keep on inviting but you have the freedom to choose. I hope and pray that many who are empty will have the courage to accept the invitation of Christ to live the authentic freedom and love found in Christ alone. Indeed our hearts are restless until it rests in Him. That’s really wonderful to know that you have to heal yourself so that you can help others in the future. I pray that one day you will be able to lead a lot of other younger people to a meaningful life in Christ esp when we are inundated with so much sensual images from the media. Purity and chastity need to be proclaimed from the rooftops so that we won’t be enslaved by the devil but only enslaved by the love of Christ. May God continue to bless you in your spiritual journey. Pray for us as well.

The poor girl has gone from one illusion to another, leaving the false life of modelling and glamour to spend time in Medjugorje, the false apparition site. Still, it is clear that God wants her soul and so we must assume that He will enlighten her to the falseness of the place she has chosen as her place of spirituality. Fatima is where she wants to be, not the money-spinning ruse that is Medjugorje. Please God the Holy See will soon make formal the condemnations and prohibitions of the local bishops in respect to Medjugorje. It has already forbidden formal parish pilgrimages, which is a good start.

  • Anonymous

Go to Fatima and get away from this false apparition site. Be led by what the local bishops say concerning this place and by what the saints teach us about the discernment of spirits, not by emotion and sensationalism. Medjugorje is so patently ridiculous that it is hard to believe that any sensible person could be duped by it. Sorry, but it’s the truth!

  • Diskywalker63

Martyjo- You have no idea what you are talking about!  Medjugorje is a very holy, religious site with so many conversions, like myself coming from it.  I experienced Love, Gods presence, and miracles. Pope John Paul II believed in the Marian apparitions at Medjugorje.  Lots of good is coming from this site, look at the signs of faith by the visionaries. I follow the Medjugorje site religiously.  You need to do your research better before you start offending God and laying on a false claim that the apparitions are not real. It is obvious that you must of had a bad experience with someone there and now you are just attacking Medjugorje out of your anger.  I will pray for you.

  • The Moz

    Wow.

Diskywalker63, I am as well acquainted with the history and facts of Medjugorje as I am with the doctrines of my Catholic Faith, the encyclicals of all the Popes and the teachings of all the Councils of the Church. I am a Catholic columnist so I have to know my subject very well. I can assure you, then, that it is rather you who are misguided and uninformed, one of the many who have attached themselves to Medjugorje for emotional rather than theological reasons.

You may tell me what wonderful experiences you have had at that place, how you feel God’s presence there and how devout the Seers are. I will simply counter with the facts that the local bishops have declared against the apparitions and have demonstrated with evidence, in regard both to the Seers and certain prominent Fransiscans in the region, that a disobedient spirit lies behind Medjugorje. That Pope John Paul II had some kind of devotion to Medjugorje is news to me. Perhaps you could present irrefutable proof of this, although I doubt you can.

At any rate, the mere suggestiion that the Blessed Virgin has thus far imparted some 30,000 messages of relative unimportance to these (fairly well paid) Seer charlatans brings the Church into great disrepute. I cannot believe that anyone with a modicum of common sense could believe such rubbish. You may rest assured that the Church will soon make the condemnation of Medjugorje formal. In the meantime, you may wish to leave the emotional stuff aside and learn from the Saints how to discern the spirits. First rule: If it is not approved by the Church and has local episcopal disaproval, then leave it well alone. God demands obedience to our lawful superiors in these matters.

  • Anonymous

Mark, the devil often appears disguised as an angel of light. If there is something supernatural going on in Medjugorje, you may rest assured that it’s not from God. God does not engender disobedience to the lawful authorities of the Church, which is what Medjugorje is built upon!

Dear Friend … I’ll answer directly … John Paul II had a great devotion toMedjugorje and I am in possession of a letter of his, written in Polish whichspeaks openly for example: I go every night on a pilgrimage to Medjugorje withmy prayers .. And many other things, a letter on Oct. 7 in Rome at presentmeeting of Medjugorje, where they called me to testify.

    Dear Ania,

Obscure letters in Polish purported to have been written by Pope John Paul II just don’t do it for me, I’m afraid. I’m a facts person and the fact is that Medjugorje has been dismissed by the local bishops after proper investigation. The Vatican has also forbidden organised parish pilgrimages to the place and there are no authorised miracles recorded against it. In addition, as I have already pointed out, there is a very real history of disobedience on the parts of both the seers and the Franciscans in that region.

All in all, I am not particularly interested in emotional testimony in respect to these supposed events in Medjugorje for the simple reason that human emotions are not trustworthy and Lucifer is very clever in that regard. It wouldn’t be the first time he has attracted the curious with apparent heavenly visitations and mass hysteria. The truth of these matters must be left to the Church and the Church, in the persons of the local bishops, has spoken clearly.

Our Lady was sublimely obedient to God. Our Lord was obedient unto death. We, then, must be obedient to those who have the authority of God to judge these matters of apparitions. I have not seen much of this willingness to obey on the part of those who promote Medjugorje. I’m sorry, but Medjugorje is a manifestation of falsehood and rebellion, and we all know who those trademarks belong to!

    ‘Fairly well paid’

Do you have evidence of this, perhaps?

  • James H

Well, if we’re going to be pedantic, Fatima has spawned a whole industry of mean-spirited, borderline schismatic Catholics who insist the Novus Ordo Mass is invalid. They also insist that the Pope, assorted Cardinals and Sr Lucia are all lying when they say that the Third Secret has been revealed; and they even insist that the Soviet Union never broke up! So if we’re going by the fruits of the fruitcakes :) we can find fault even with approved private revelation.

  • Anonymous

I am aware of traditional Catholics who say, as did Cardinals Ottaviani and Bacci back in 1969, that the New Mass has departed from Catholic theology and is dangerous to one’s faith, which I think the past four decades has proved indisputably. I am also aware of one Cardinal, Cardinal Bertone, whose claim that Sr. Lucia told him that all has been done as Our Lady of Fatima requested, is seriously questioned in light of what Sr. Lucy had said consistently up to his apparent clandestine meeting with her. I am not aware of anyone having called the Pope a liar. What I have heard, and I agree with it, is the conclusion that the Pope has taken Fr. Dhanis’ fantastic theories on Fatima to heart, and therefore does not believe that certain aspects revealed by Sr. Lucy to have actually come from Our Lady. Hence, when he says that the “genuine” Third Secret has been revealed, he believes this to be true. The part retained is not considered by him to be genuine.

Our Lady never spoke of the Soviet Union, but rather of the “errors of Russia,” so what difference does it make if the Soviet Union actually broke up in 1989 or if it was all a ruse to fool the West. One thing is certain and that is that Russia has spread atheistic Socialism to every nation, and now one can see in Vladimir Putin a return to despotic Russian rule. We have every reason to fear what is yet to come from Russia. Also, are you aware that 98% of domains that host child pornography websites in Europe are based in Russia? So much for Russia having been converted to the Catholic Faith! We’ll leave it at that.

Don’t pay any attention to ‘guest’ who obviously has never been to medjugorje.  It is great to hear your story Ania!  Like Mary says, we dont have much time left before the chastisements will befall mankind.  I was in Medjugorje in 1987 and got some great pictures and personally watched the sun spin  the colors of the rainbow one by one around the sun, maybe you’ve seen it.  My mother was with me and we had such a moving experience there.  We could feel the presence of God.  It changed both of our lives and I can say that my faith is stronger because of my trip to medjugorje.  I will pray for you that God will show you what he has planned for your life.  Be strong and don’t worry about what others say….we know Mary comes to lead us to her son…why anyone would have a problems with that, I don’t know.  But I suspect that it is because they need attention.  God Bless

Your objection about disobedience the local bishops seem to me similar to the that of the synagogue’s official of today’s gospel:  Luke 13:10-17. “Come and be healed… but not on the sabath”. Jesus reply is very simple: “Hypocrites!”. People mustn’t convert in Medjugorie because the bishop of Mostar sees it as sth not fitting to his pastoral schema? Rosary, fasting, sacrament of reconciliation, Eucharist… is it – as you write – “a manifestation of falsehood and rebellion”? Yes, indeed, but rebellion to the prince of this world, so much wanted by Christ and the Church.

The Catholic Church and all other ‘christian religions’ have erred and committed appalling crimes against humanity…typically justified by “well.men are sinners” as though connected intimately to the hierarchy is not a responsibility.

As well as murdering ‘heritics’ and claiming a temporal kingdom Christianity has erred in supporting the diabolical cult of zionism, purporting historical untruths and supporting its mass murder world wide and its handing over thousands of ‘old order’ jews to the gestapo…the real ‘holocaust’. . In general terms any connecting to judaism is non christian.

Jesus did not appear to enhance judaism but to form a completely new path to salvation and inner peace. The term ‘judeo-christian’ would be well struck out of christian phrase. It is irrelevant as is Abraham and the other psychotic stories of the Talmud and old testament highlighting the mental illness of the jewish created-for-political-purpose “g-d”…which only ignorance of the old testament can sustain as being a loving and just father.

The Catholic church astoundingly handed over its investments to the enemy of sanctity and peace ..the deRothschilds…for investments. From this came a lightening-off on Freemasonry (taken over by “de Rothschild” around 1770.) and the ritual murder of Roberto Calvi  was amongst other hierarchial crimes especially in the USA in pursuit of money power and sex….leading very likely to the murder of Pope Paul 1 who tried to overcome it by removing the eclesiastical criminals. Now when people are turning towards Miriam (Mar)y, scathing criticisms arise here…do they have a place?..yes of course. Does it matter whether Jesus died and was resurrected?…no not at all for if that was the time for ‘salvation’ his death and resurrection was irrelevant. Does it matter if Mary appears at this site or any other..NO, not at all, if the message is for the pursuit of goodness and holiness and kindness as Ania also states…Don’t get hooked up in supernatural dispute…as though you have perfect knowledge. Don’t accuse of Lucifer (illuminati is the organism today as represented on the US currency) or Satan or Beelzebub or Mammon or Baal…Jesus made the point when also accused of casting out demons by the power of what we call Satan “a kingdom divided cannot stand”…Satan cannot prosper in evil by attacking himself. We see this today with the division between decent people and the les and deceptions, torture murder and dispossession of the Israeli-American Presidential conspiracy for a new world order..for which they have murdered several millions of people, financed and directed by the Central banker families and the Bilderbergers. These orders of profound secrecy and intention to control all mankind are relentlessly represented by high degree free-masons who delude their lower orders into their evil mindset who approach the general public looking like angels when even the courts, the political ‘leaders” so called the and the  police must, as free-masons in great presence,  save them from damage. Thus the secret signs immediately recognised as coming from  a free-mason in distress or danger.

You would be far more value to yourself and to us all if you spent time pondering and enacting the
messages said  to be  from Mary, whether you think she is there or not and taking on board the suggestions for goodness and giving good example to all. If the message is evil you will see that. If the message questions your hierarchy, ponder it, don’t dismiss it.

Christianity is polluted but is slowly emerging from it, from the darkness of evil perpetrated in “god’s name ” (note never Jesus’ name…he and the Jewish god are alien to each other and cannot be related)and fortunately this is through the mystical body as it should be rather than the hierarchy.

In making an issue of genuineness you are attempting to create a rift and in doing so miss the point  of the messages or creations or whatever you deem them to be…altogether. If the message says keep an eye on the priests and all the rest, do so…no harm will come unless you become irrational and we should be doing it message or no message.

The church establishment (including columnists), almost to a man, is against Med and anything like it. They object to anything supernatural occurring today. They would object to Fatima if they could. Only coming events will (hopefully) change their minds… The church will never condemn Med, unless the next pope is a false pope, as expected.
