Al-Qaeda official said Catholics in Ireland were ‘fertile ground’ for conversion

A US al-Qaeda official concluded that Catholics were “fertile ground” for conversion, “particularly after the rage expanding against the mother church [Vatican] as a result of its scandals and policies refused by many of its public”.

American al-Qaeda spokesman Adam Gadahn wrote to Osama bin Laden in January 2011 and laid out reasons for reaching out to Catholics, particularly the Irish. He urged bin Laden to use public anger at the Church’s mishandling of clerical abuse to encourage Irish people to convert to Islam, according to newly declassified documents.

The letter was contained in files allegedly found at bin Laden’s Pakistan hideout after he was killed by US special forces in Abbottabad, Pakistan, last May.

The Combating Terrorism Centre, a privately funded research base at the US Military Academy at West Point, posted a number of declassified documents belonging to bin Laden on its website yesterday.

They were taken in the raid on his house.

The letter from Mr Gadahn particularly highlighted the reason for approaching the Irish, noting Ireland was not a participant in “Bush’s Crusade wars”.

It noted “the increasing anger in Ireland towards the Catholic Church after exposing a number of sex scandals and others” and speaks of the hunger of youths because of the economic downturn in Ireland.

Mr Gadahn wrote that Irish people, “who were the most religious of atheist Europe”, were moving toward secularism.

“Why do not we face them with Islam?” he asked.

He said he considered preparing a similar message to Catholics living in Arab regions, calling them to Islam: “Catholics were historically the prominent enemies of the Jews, among the other Christians. They were also the original enemies to the evangelist Protestant[s] who were the vanguard of the Crusades.

“Their public in general, these days, is more sympathetic and understanding of the Muslims, than other Protestant and Orthodox Christians,” he said.

However, he said he put off his message following backlash from an attack on a Catholic church in Iraq.

Fifty-eight people died in an attack on the Syrian Catholic Church in Baghdad on October 31, 2010, after military officials tried to end a terrorist siege of the church.

Well there you have it Ireland.
You can go back to the religion of the druids or you can have Mohammed [the johnny come lately] and all that associated baggage

But if you have any wisdom, the choice has to be Christ and the Catholic Church once the Augean Stables have been cleaned out.

  • Uche abarikwu

If a religion that has committed more atrocities than the less than 1% clerical abuse recorded in the church is now wooing the people of Ireland to convert to there faith then it is a food for taught for the people of Ireland. it is left for them to make a choice. I will advice them to follow the path of Joshua and his family

  • Apostolic

All the pubs would close…Not! Lapsed Irish Catholics would make very poor Muslims, just as in previous centuries the few indigenous apostates made very poor Protestants, and those Protestant clergy who anticipated and worked for a mass apostasy invariably died broken men. Whatever the bad news from Ireland, there is no reason to suspect that Islam will be any more successful.

  • David Lindsay

What “otherwise dark world”? Rome? All the other centres on the Continent? It is amazing how many ordinarily sensible Irish people manage to believe this rubbish. The darkness in which the Irish Saints were occasional points of light was Ireland, no significant proportion of the population of which was Catholic until the middle of the nineteenth century. Go back only a  couple of generations again, and you will find that, less than a hundred years before the beginning of mass emigration, the Irish were still so pagan that they were widely polygamous. Not much later, in the great scheme of things, Islam should suit them down to the ground.

  • MJCarroll

     Well said diarmuidlee

  • Hughes196

Once they realize they have to give up beer, they won’t convert.

  • Bridget

I like your comment very much and I can confirm for you from my home here in Kerry that the Christian faith and overwhelming trust in Christ is still alive here, bruised and damaged but alive. I can also say that islam is a very worrying prospect and that it is my belief that Ireland has been targeted, I withdrew my own children from RE because I believe a very biased favourable slant is being given to all things islamic. One only has to use their eyes to see the massive numbers of muslims on the streets of Dublin, Cork and even Killarney. The question has to be asked why do they come to a country which apart from being Christian also has a drink culture and a culture of literature and music, particularly so when a massive recession is being played out. We in Ireland need to be vigilant, believe in our glorious past, rejoice in being once an isle of saints and scholars and rescue our religion from the hands of those evil abusers and those who covered it up to protect their worldly occupation and reputation

  • Mikethelionheart

    David

There was no significant Catholic population in Ireland until the mid 1800s????

    What absolute garbage.

What nonsense book did you read to get it so wrong?

  • maxmarley

Ireland may be fertile ground for islam regretfully but the current Irish elite seem also to be cosying up to chinese style marxism as well [both ideologies well known for their tender concern for human rights].
Gilmore, Higgins, Kenny, Adams and others of the elite want to be the cool New Age European Enlightenment types as well.Have we got stupid politicians as well as stupid bishops? They seem to be hell bent on throwing out the traditional Irish baby with the bath water.
Ireland needs changing but certainly this is not the way forward.

  • David Lindsay

Any serious work that you like on the subject. Explanations of the causes vary, and it is often blamed on the loss of church buildings at the Reformation. But for my money that is wishful thinking. The Dissolution of the Monasteries did destroy the Church in Ireland, but that was because those institutions contained pretty much the only practising Catholics in that overwhelmingly pagan country.

  • Simon Davies

Your astute observation seems to suggest that the problem in Ireland is principally a cultural one, rather than an exclusively ecclesial one. Perhaps I’m putting words in your mouth. But, as Cardinal Brady suggested in his recent statement, “I… accept that I was part of an unhelpful culture of deference and silence in society, and the Church, which thankfully is now a thing of the past.” Is Ireland in the midst of an identity crisis? The tragedy is, nobody in Ireland seems to realise it, and find scapegoats to explain their anguish to themselves.

  • Simon Davies

Catholics aren’t fertile ground for conversion. Those who remain Catholic, and do not separate themselves from the Church by scandal and pride.

In Spain, after the Islamic invasion, the conversion of peoples was such an easy endevour, principally because most of the population were Arian heretics; they were not Catholic, in the proper sense.

  • teigitur

What a good and true posting.

  • David Lindsay

And what were Martin McGuinness and Eamon Gilmore doing in 1975? The
entire system of government in Northern Ireland is designed to ensure
that the Provos are always in office, while the Stickies’ coup within
the moribund old Irish Labour Party, which always holds the balance of
power in the Republic, effectively places them in the same position. The
number two job in both states is now always held by the organisation
that not very long ago was trying to bomb them both out of existence.
Gilmore’s wing of that organisation did not decommission its weapons
until 8th February 2010, within the last 24 hours of the existence of
the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning.

  • David Lindsay

It is notable that, entirely matter-of-factly, his experience of Catholics in the Middle East leads him to see people from that background as second to none when it comes to opposition to Zionism. He is, of course, quite right.

  • Jeannine

Moderate Muslims come to Ireland & other Christian countries because they know they can practice their form of Islam in peace & earn a decent wage to feed their families. Who the heck wants to live in a region dominated by Islamic terrorists in the Middle East? It is also a region where the hatred between Sunni & Shia is so intense that I’m beginning to believe it’s almost as bad as the hatred the Islamists have towards the Jews.

  • Lindi

I should think that if Ireland were to embrace Islam a ” culture of deference and silence”   would hit them like a runaway train !  Without those two traits how else is Islam able to exercise control over its followers.

  • Jae

I agree with you diarmudlee, sad huh? I can totally foresee that in the near future the western world particularly the European peninsula will be lost to the Muslim religion. The rapid growth of secularism and apostasy of her people from the True Faith and add that to the exponentially growing Muslim population either born or from migration will eventually erase the christian heritage of Europe.

This is happening again when people forget and refuse the Holy Saviour as found in the Scripture in the book of Revelation that God extinguish and abandons unfaithful people of the Light of his grace….look at Turkey once the capital of Christianity.

  • Jae

We lost those rich Catholic treasures and Biblical places like Nicea where the historical 2 Councils pronounced the Divinity of Christ and the Creed, Hagia Sopia Cathedral, Constantinople, Ephesus, Sardis, Philedelphia, Bergama and a lot more Byzantine heritage and treasures converted to Islam. When people forget Jesus Christ like what have happened to these places once a triving catholic communities then this will eventually result. Sad but it’s their own doing.

  • Parasum

That’s a familiar argument often used against Catholicism; the idea being that only fools or knaves could possibly take Catholicism as a way of life.

Maybe there is more to Islam than the well-publicised seamy side. If that argument is a valid defence of Catholicism, may be it is valid for Islam too.

If Ireland ever became largely Muslim, it could remain the Emerald Isle.

  • CatholicVoice

Another supreme act of deception by the globalist hoaxers!
“Adam Gadahn” is Jewish Mossad agent Adam Pearlman. He knows full well that Osama Bin Laden died in 2001 from severe kidney failure. The story of Osama Bin Laden’s Pakistan hideout, his killing and burial at sea is pure Hollywood, total fiction from start to finish.
The alleged “letter” suggests that Catholics disgusted by the sexual immorality of Vatican II clergy may become radicalised and turn to Islam. What’s the point of this? Clearly to instil in people’s minds a hidden connection between terrorism and Catholicism. This is a subtle but deadly form of hate-speech against Catholics.
Now Catholics are rightly disgusted by the apostasy and sexual depravity of the judeo-masonic clergy who infested the Church and seized control of all its external institutions in the 1960s. But they’re also disgusted by the satanic religion called Islam.
Sacred Head of Jesus, protect us all from these cunning lies and calumnies.

  • buckingham88

‘America is the head of the non-believers….Even though we have the chance to attack the British,we should not waste our effort to do so but concentrate on defeating America.’ Osama bin Laden
Judging by this Ireland was always very safe.
As for the French reports that Osama was dead it just proves their needs for disinformation were greater than those of the US.The US probably tracked him for years, milked him and his network for intelligence until they found it was beaten, then went in for the kill.
His epithet ‘I worry people will tire of me and [what I say]will become old and worn out to them! But I protest only to God’.
Sometimes it suits a superpower to have an enemy. But that does not mean that we need to respond as if that enemy is as big,bad and powerful as the superpower suggests.

  • Mikethelionheart

    David

    You’re talking nonsense.
I did Irish history at university.
I think you need to reconsider where you get your ‘information’ from.

  • J G

They may be angry at the Church and even leave her, but if they think the Irish will embrace Islam then they don’t know the Irish.

  • J G

Your anti-semitism is disgusting and a sin.

  • CatholicVoice

Perhaps you’re not a Catholic, but you should know that to deliberately calumniate and seek to destroy someone’s good reputation by describing them as an “anti-semite” would qualify as a mortal sin.
It’s also racist to drag matters of race into a discussion where it has absolutely no place. Catholics don’t oppose Judaism and Jewish supremacism on racial grounds, but purely on religious and ideological grounds. Racism of any kind is a vicious trait.

  • Fr Thomas Poovathinkal

IF THE PRIEST PERVERTS  OF THE IRISH CHURCH ARE TO BE BROUGHT TO BOOK THE GOOD SHEPHERD IN ST.PETER’S CHAIR HAS TO MOVE  OUT  PERSONALLY IN THE SPIRIT AND POWER OF BLESSED POPE JOHN PAUL II INTO THE SHEEP-FOLD IN IRELAND; IF NOT THE GOOD SHEPHERD IS ABANDONING HIS SHEEP.

IN POPE JOHN PAUL II WE HAVE HAD A GO GETTER. IN HIS VERY NAME WE HAVE  : 1.JOHN; IN HIM WE HAVE THE MOST LOYAL AND BELOVED APOSTLE OF THE LORD; 2. PAUL; IN PAUL WE THE MOST VORACIOUS ENEMY OF THE ENEMY OF GOD’S PEOPLE. WELL, OUR POPE JOHN PAUL II WAS WORTHY OF HIS GREAT NAME INDEED.

WILL OUR PRESENT POPE LEAVE THE SHEEP OF CHRIST THE LORD TO RAVENOUS WOLVES AND RUN AWAY?

LET US ALL PRAY THAT  OUR PRESENT POPE BENEDICT XVI MAY PERSONALLY  GO AGAIN AND AGAIN IF NEEDED AND SAVE ALL THE SHEEP OF THE LORD IN IRISH CHURCH AND NOT RUN AWAY.

  • Fr Thomas Poovathinkal

SATAN ALSO HAS A RELIGION. IT TAKES OVER WHEN CHRISTIANS AND ESPECIALLY CHRISTIAN CHURCH LEADERS BETRAY CHRIST OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND THUS GET HIM CRUCIFIED IN EVERY AGE DOWN TO OUR OWN TIMES.

IF PUNISHMENTS  FOR THE SIN OF REPEATED  BETRAYALS ARE NOT UNDERSTOOD  AND ACCEPTED IN THE RIGHT SPIRIT IT IS GIVEN BY GOD HIMSELF, THEN THERE IS NO HOPE OF SALVATION. THE CULPRIT: THE SPIRIT OF THE PHARISEE IN THE LEADERS.

  • Fr Thomas Poovathinkal

TO WHOM DID JESUS SAY, “GET BEHIND ME SATAN”?

  • David Lindsay

Which university? Taught by whom? And how long ago?

  • Fr Thomas Poovathinkal

ONCE I READ IN AN INDIAN DAILY NEWSPAPER, ON A PARTICULAR, OPPORTUNE OCCASION, IT SOUNDED LIKE A BATTLE CRY,  “WE WILL CONQUER ROME”.

ACTUALLY IT IS  ALL HAPPENING IN A QUIET BUT LOUD ENOUGH WAY: ALL BY WAY OF PUNISHMENT FROM GOD. QUIET : BECAUSE THE LEADERS OF THE BIG CHRISTIAN CHURCHES  (THE LEADERS ARE NOT TRUE  APOSTLES IN PRACTICE – I REMEMBER IN MY STATE OF KERALA WHEN THE WORD PROCLAMATION MINISTRY STARTED ALL THE LEADERS OF A CHURCH WERE AGAINST IT, NOT ONE WAS FOR IT, IMAGINE!)  ARE TOO BUSY COUNTING MONEY, HELPING THEIR OWN PEOPLE AND CONTROLLING AND GUIDING EVERY ONE. THESE LEADERS NEITHER SEE NOR HEAR AND UNDERSTAND. THEY ARE FULL OF ACTION, THEY HAVE NO  PATIENCE AND TIME TO LISTEN AND UNDERSTAND.

ONE HAS TO SEEK OUT THE CHRIST IN THEIR HEARTS  TO FIND OUT WHICH ONE IT IS THAT THEY WORSHIP! IRELAND NOW IS THE TYPICAL CASE IN POINT.

THE LEADERS  ARE TOO BUSY CONQUERING THE WORLD DIVIDING IT INTO SECTORS AND PUTTING UP BIG STRUCTURES. IF ANYBODY CRIES, “WOULF” THEY TURN ENEMICAL.BECAUSE OF THIS PROPHETS, SONS AND DAUGHTERS  OF GOD ARE NOT SEEN TO INTERVENE OR MAY BE THEY ARE NOT THERE DUE TO THE RITUALISATION OF GOD’S WORD IN THEIR CHURCHES.

THE LEADERS ARE TOO BUSY KEEPING THE PEOPLE OCCUPIED WITH ALL SORTS OF RITUAL, DOGMAS, CELEBRATIONS AND ACTIVITIES RELATED APPARENTLY TO RELIGION AND PROMOTING THE CAUSE OF GOD! BUT THEY ARE NOT FOUND, IN THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH-SEEKERS, TO SIT AND COUNT THE COST AND THE FRUIT PRODUCED AFTER 2000 YEARS OF THEIR CHRISTIANITY!

  • Fr Thomas Poovathinkal

SATANIC ELEMENT IS FOUND IN ALL RELIGIONS: SIN AND THE TENDENCY TO BE A LAW UNTO ONESELF.

ONLY THE RELIGION OF TRUTH SEEKERS  CAN BE EXEMPTED.

  • CatholicVoice

The “religion of truth-seekers”? That is the Catholic religion. So why invent another name for it? Those who are of the truth always hear Christ’s voice (Jn 18.37). And Christ always demands they join His One Church. All else, including the multitudinous fake “truth-seekers”, are lost for eternity. Extra ecclesiam nulla salus.
By the way, the CapsLock key is located on the left-hand side of the keyboard.

  • Fr Thomas Poovathinkal

    LET US PAY ATTENTION:

WHY DID GOD WORK AGAINST  HIS OWN PEOPLE THE
    ISRAELITES?

FOR TURNING AWAY FROM HIM, THEY WENT ON SINNING OBSTINATELY.

GO AND DISCOVER THIS FACT FROM THE HISTORY OF SALVATION  PRIOR  TO THE COMING OF JESUS THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON
    OF GOD.

THE ISRAELITES WERE MERCILESSLY HANDED OVER TO THEIR ENEMIES… BECAUSE OF THEIR
SINFUL  LIVING WHICH WENT AGAINST THE
PLAN AND WILL OF GOD FOR THEM.

THE ONLY WAY OUT FOR THE CHRISTIAN CHURCHES IS “THE WAY”; REPENT AND
BELIEVE IN THE GOOD NEWS OF “THE WAY”, THE WORD MADE FLESH AND FOLLOW
    HIM AND OBEY HIM.

THIS HAS TO HAPPEN FIRST AND FOREMOST AMONG THE WORLD CONQUERING  CHURCH LEADERS, WHO ARE NOT TRUE APOSTLES IN
THE SPIRIT OF THE SON OF GOD, BUT WHO STAKE THEIR CLAIM ARROGANTLY T O OFFICES
OF THE ORIGINAL 12 APOSTLES  AS HANDED OVER TO THEMSELVES… IT IS LIKE
THOSE WHO PRACTISED  SELF-DECEPTION SAYING CONTINUOUSLY TO THEMSELVES,
“THE TEMPLE OF THE LORD, THE TEMPLE OF THE LORD, THE TEMPLE OF THE
LORD” AND WENT ON LIVING BY PERFORMING DEAD RITUALS UNACCEPTABLE TO THE
    LORD.

DID THE LORD PROVE THEM RIGHT BY STANDING BY THEM? WELL, THE SAME IS THE CASE
HERE. IF THE LORD IS FIGHTING AGAINST US USING SOMEBODY OUTSIDE OF US, WHAT
    DOES IT MEAN?

FIGHTING, OPPOSING OR  TRYING TO CONQUER,
MALIGNING  OR HATING THE MUSLIMS IS NOT THE RIGHT THING HERE TO DO.

LISTEN TO THE WORD AND OBEY HIM. HERE LIES OUR SALVATION. THE LEADERS NEED TO
BECOME  APOSTLES  IN PRACTICE FIRST AND FOREMOST.

    Liverpool actually.

I graduated this century, just in case you were going to make the spurious claim that my teaching is outdated.
And where did you learn your ‘history’ please?

In really think this Fr. Thomas Poo is not really what he says he is. I also don’t think he is a priest of the Catholic Church. Nobody can understand his “screaming” (capitalized) post anyways!

  • Catholic Voice

Read this post while you may!

I pointed out that Adam Gadahn had changed his name from Adam Pearlman and was an agent in Mossad-controlled Al Qaeda. (The evidence for this can easily be located on the Internet). The point of Pearlman’s allegedly discovered letter was clearly to form an association in the public mind between traditional Catholics and radicalised Islam.

When I was gratutuitously attacked for “anti-semitism” (see below), I pointed out in a second posting that this was itself a racist presumption and a grave calumny, indeed a mortal sin.

Both my posts have been now deleted by the “Catholic” Herald. Why? They haven’t had the grace to inform me. One can only surmise that “metus Iudaeorum” is responsible. No doubt this post will also be effaced by this shameful pusillanimity.

  • James H

    Ooh, red meat!

The combination of ignorance and credulity makes Dawkins look like an intelligent commentator on the subject… ‘The evangelist Protestants were in the vanguard of the crusades’?? As long as they’re this vapidly ignorant, there’s really no threat from proselytisers.

I like how he’s licking his lips at the thought of catching people fed up with paedophilia – only to offer them a religion where it’s perfectly acceptable: marry an 11-year-old to look after you and your wife in your old age, great idea!

It’s hard to be tolerant and non-racist, when the subject of your worse inclinations is so hell-bent on conforming to prejudice!

  • James H

As expected, the silence is deafening!

The down-side of the internet is the absolute tosh parading as ‘hidden history’.

  • James H

That’s exactly what the Ukranians said: they took up Orthodox Christianity because ‘drink is the soul of the Rus!’ King Volodymir converted his whole kingdom.

  • Kennyinliverpool

I know of a few Irish Catholics (as in Irish people who live in Ireland who are Catholic) who have converted to Islam out of frustration with the abuse crisis. — I think a lot of Irish people will leave the Church — and they have good reason to as it is unbelievable that sexual abuse would occur in the church. — It’s so shocking.
    – Hopefully Irish people will start their own churches rather than leaving Christianity all together.

  • JByrne24

This is one of the aspects that the Islamic fundamentalists obviously have in mind: The Abuse  Scandal, and much worse the Covering Up attempted by the catholic hierarchy which probably breaks the Irish Legal Code.
The Irish, like others, will also note the fact that such abuse and cover up in the Church is widespread around the world.
It probably has a great deal to do with repressed sexuality – one thing that the Church is really good at.

Until recently the Church in Ireland was more “traditional” than in many other places, and its members were more willing to accept idiotic Fundamentalist preaching. (“A priest-ridden nation” the Irish genius James Joyce wrote).
The Fundamental Islamists possibly believe they will have easy pickings. After all SOMETHING must fill the void.

  • Apostolic

It’s been tried, as elsewhere, and with even less success. The Irish do not make great Protestants (those who do are descendants of original Scottish and English importees).

  • simontmn

” They were also the original enemies to the evangelist Protestant[s] who were the vanguard of the Crusades”

It seems that the lack of good history teaching in our schools has infected even Al Qaeda.
