Pro-lifers step up prayer vigils despite legal threat

Pro-life prayer vigils outside abortion clinics are expected to increase across London despite the threat of legal action from a global abortion provider.

The pro-life prayer group 40 Days for Life will hold vigils outside abortion clinics in Brixton, Bedford Square and the Marie Stopes clinic in Whitfield Street between September 26 and November 4 of this year.

The prayer vigils have become increasingly controversial since abortion provider Marie Stopes tried to secure a legal injunction against another pro-life group, the Good Counsel Network, for praying outside their clinic holding “baby pink and blue rosary beads”.

During the latest prayer vigil led by 40 Days for Life outside the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) clinic in Bedford Square, London, the organisation Abortion Rights launched a counter-protest following accusations that members of 40 Days for Life had filmed women entering abortion clinics.

Responding to criticisms in a blog post last week, a spokeswoman for 40 Days for Life said that the media had “massively twisted what happens at 40 Days For Life”.

She continued: “They have tried to present it as an American-style ‘protest’ which it isn’t at all. At all vigils there is a sign displayed prominently saying ‘we are here to help’. And the help that is on offer is real, as many women will attest. No one is judging, condemning or bullying but trying to offer a lifeline.

“It is grotesquely wrong and unfair to conflate peaceful pro-life outreach with the murder of abortionists. All pro-lifers are appalled by violence, because we believe that all human life is worthy of our respect and protection. A few lone crazies do not represent any organisation or movement. It would be equally wrong to tar all peaceful Muslims with the 9/11 brush, or all atheists with the murderous purges of Stalin, Pol Pot or the French Revolution.”

What a strange world we are living in. In Russia three women danced naked in a Church and were arrested, the West is incensed and demands their release, because the Russians were so “barbaric, undemocratic” . Now in the civilized West, people who protest against murder of unborn children are threatened with arrest and the secular population find it to be O.K.

A deep moral hypocrisy exists in the self-conceited Western world.

  • Guest1

What sinful actions these ‘protesters’ are engaged in. Bullying and intimtating women who are going through traumatic and life changing experiences is not something that I think the Church should be engaged in, however much I believe abortion is wrong. All too often other Catholics seem so concerned for the unborn child but show complete disregard for the mother carrying it.

  • Gail Finke

As an American who has participated in 40 Days for Life vigils, I assure you that they are not sinful or bullying. People simply stand by the gates or on the sidewalks and pray. They have grown rapidly precisely because they are not protests, but provide an opportunity for people to doing something positive — pray for all involved — and provide help if and when possible. If praying for others is bullying them in your country, what has happened to Great Britain?

Please get your facts straight. 40 days for life not only protest against abortion, they are there to offer help and support to women that have had abortion. The same with Good Council Network. You have to go and see for yourself.
They give women another alternative which they don’t usually get due to pressure from their partners, parents or friends. Countless women have changed their minds because someone was there to offer them an alternative.
Stop believing the lies main stream media writes and do more research. In April this year, I witnessed these lies myself, when they wrote about bullying and intimidation by Prolife group at BPAS when it was the Pro-abortion groups that where the one intimidating Prolife groups.

  • ASimpleCatholic

Protest is used here in a pejorative sense. But if you are protesting against the Pope, the U.S., Israel, the Church, the older generation… you will be praised. If you protest against murder of unborn children, you are a bully in the eyes of the media.
The pro-life people are protesting against clinics and medicals who make money out of these women’s misery. The protesters are happy if they are allowed to assist the mothers-to-be and help them to find a nice family to adopt their child. Studies show that there are not enough children for adoption because most of them are aborted. People go to the third world for adoption. Not that it would be a problem when third world orphans find in this way a better life in the rich western world. But it shows that the argument of the pro-choice crowd is flawed.

So true. The Catholic Church is the only trusted and will continue to fight the Pseudo-democratic hallucinated world of deceit. I believe in my Catholic Church, and  i am PRO-LIFE. I AM A COLLEGE STUDENT AND I KNOW THERE ARE SO MANY YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN LIKE ME, WHO ARE STANDING AGAINST THE MODERN PSEUDO- HYPOCRISY.

  • Oconnord

“In Russia three women danced naked in a Church and were arrested….”
That is a blatant lie. Your comment got 13 “likes”( four times more than any other). Other people are also willing to ignore facts, if they like the moral judgement you pronounce.

There are many reasons to oppose abortion, but on this thread, couching real facts with nasty lies seems to garner popularity.

“They have tried to present it as an American-style ‘protest’ which it isn’t at all” That’s exactly what it is. 40 Days for Life even use photographs obtained from their counterparts in the US. These images are blown up to ridiculous and misleading magnifications and they take no account of the distress they cause to passers by, including children. Imagine the pain caused to women with late stage pregnancies seeking an abortion due to severe foetal abnormalities.

  • Religion is stupid

The catholic church as the biggest paedophile ring on earth has done so much harm to children, I dont see it in a position to comment with any moral authority

  • Paul McCabe

Oh, the so familiar “it’s not bullying, we’re here to help..” nonsense.  Of course you are…in large numbers…outside of the clinics…with placards…pointed directly at the women entering these premises.  Yes, you’re right, nothing intimidating about that right?

  • Dave

    “biggest paedophile ring on earth”
Try widening your search. In England, of hundreds of paedophile convictions the vast majority have occurred in teaching, social services and child care. A leading politician, Margaret Hodge who was in charge of Islington Council in London dismissed allegations of abusebecause they came from a “deeply disturbed individual”. Her director of Social Services told social workers not to waste time investigating abuse. The ring leader of the abuse was a man with extensive political connections.
Not a priest or nun in sight. Oh and just for good measure Hodge was given special responsibility for children by Blair.
Meanwhile back on topic abortion is ugly brutal murder.

  • ASimpleCatholic

I understand that you prefer murdering the unborn in private, without being protested against …

  • ASimpleCatholic

So pictures of aborted babies are too embarrassing for our pro-choice folk who are too sensitive to look at them? So why abort babies at all? Is there any rational explanation?

  • ASimpleCatholic

Real facts? What real fact is concealed? Weren’t the pussy riot women arrested? Weren’t the liberal media incensed? I got my fact from the Daily Beast a very liberal medium. The accusation of you is unfounded and pointless.

  • ASimpleCatholic

Since when is saying your opinion peacefully called bullying in a free democratic society?

  • nelmonster

‘Meanwhile back on topic abortion is ugly brutal murder.’ No, abortion is abortion, murder is murder. Different words, a whole world of difference. Get some, (non dogmatic) perspective for pity’s sake.

  • Dave

Nelmonster we won’t agree on the definition of abortion, but thank you because you prompted me to add that in no way are my comments an attack on women who are often desperate and too often the victims of a massively powerful abortion industry.

  • Col

    Matthew 6:5-6

Get off the streets you hypocritical twats.

  • Col

    “massively powerful abortion industry”

What’s the weather like on your planet?

For people to stand outside clinics engaging in the harassment and intimidation of women already making a tough personal decision shows total contempt for the rights of women. It is the same old story of a bunch of extremist religious nut-jobs trying to inflict their morality on others. I suggest these lunatics pack their bags and move to Honduras, where women can be jailed for even taking a morning after pill. We need to stop indulging the pretence that these protests are anything other than an assault on women’s rights to control their own reproductive status, and an attempt to drag us back to the Middle Ages. 40 days for Life is an abhorrent organisation that puts its own dogma above the welfare of women and will sink to any low to get their way. I hope the full power of the law is used to prevent their intimidating behaviour.

  • Bill

Is there any cliche you’re incapable of parroting? When you know innocent life is being extinguished, you have a duty to act.

  • Dave

Quite nice at the moment. Might go for a swim later.

  • Oconnord

Even the link you included shows that the women were NOT NAKED!
Read my comment, I wrote..”couching real facts with nasty lies seems to garner popularity.”

    Fact. The women were arrested.
Lie. The women danced naked in a church. So how’s your foot?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2XDBHIYMAH4R75XTXE6XJDTSL4 Common-sense-man

You sound to me like the member of a bunch of extremist secularist nut-jobs trying to inflict their morality on others…

  • Agent Provocateur21

I’d like to defend a guest here…What he probably meant was an incident in Ukraine, where equally deluded pro-feminist group protested half-naked in the Church. One of the extremists even attempted to attack His Holiness Patriarch Kirill with cries: Kill Kyril….Now, the political extremists who shamed themselves in Moscow are from another group – Pussy riot. The man get confused, no need to be harsh to him. Thank God Holy Rus knows how to deal with deluded women, whether in Kiev or Moscow.

  • Oconnord

    Simply put… No.
He referred to Pussy Riot and included a link to back up his point. To conclude that he meant a completely different incident is wrong.

  • Oconnord

I admit I was unaware of the incident in Ukraine, but it is obvious that the guest was not referring to that that incident as it did not result in an arrest. The Ukrainian event was treated in a far more sensible fashion, despite what you say.

“A spokesman for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church said it will not press charges against Zhdanova”.
“The girl has been shamed and lectured and I think this is quite enough,” church spokesman Vasily Anisimov told The Associated Press. “If we put a policeman next to every sin … what will our life become?”

So when you say… “Thank God Holy Rus knows how to deal with deluded women, whether in Kiev or Moscow.”
Which way of dealing with “deluded women” do you approve of? The Kiev approach or the Muscovite unfair trial and jail term?

William its not harrasment, it’s prayer ..prayer for that baby or babies about to be sucked right out with the head no longer intact and limbs ripped apart from the woman who also made a choice in 99.0 % of cases to have sex with a man. She finds herself thinking at whatever age 16 to say 35 omg I’m pregnant how did that happen omg … I knw I ll pop into a clinic for This illness to be treated. Can I ask have you ever seen an aborted baby? Have you seen how far along the nhs and private clinics will abort these children I dare say you have not coz I think your head would be hovering over a toilet spewing! It’s horrific absolutely horrific! That baby has nerve endings, that baby has been seen on screens to try wriggle away from the spear headed tool used in d&c extracts to pull the body out in pieces that’s if the tablets have nt forced labour to begin. The remains of these forsaken children millions upon millions are put in the trash to rot, or their remains are sold to scientists for all sorts of stuff! Yet a woman who losses a baby during pregnancy is devastated and mourns, weeps and yearns for that living baby in her tummy and she at certain stages can bury her baby at the same stage ones aborted ( murdered) are put in the trash! I’m sorry but those woman are blessed to have volunteers use their time to pray for her baby she is about to murder in her womb these volunteers also pray for our lord Jesus Christ to forgive these women for committing murder in the womb. All these babies had a life and were killed by their living breathing creator on earth those babies will never suckle a dummy, drink milk, learn to babble, learn to crawl and walk then go off to nursery school or primary school, their laughter is never heard their cries are never soothed and worst of all that baby had no choice! No fight! And no love shown……how bloody cruel! So don’t you preach to me about I fringment of the poor woman who murders her baby’s right or the choice she made….it’s people like you that convince females in your life that hey ho huni abortion is ure right! Murder is ok as long as the baby is nt born at 26 wks and breathing ….god watches us all and knows us all …….god hear my prayer …..please forgive these people who commit abortion and people who support abortion for they truly no not what they are doing ….amen

“We need to stop indulging the pretence that these protests are anything other than an assault on women’s rights to control their own reproductive status, and an attempt to drag us back to the Middle Ages.”

It’s about time a group brought us back to the Middle Ages, coz this modern throwback to classical antiquity is starting to destroy society like it did two thousand years ago.

Although I don’t agree with her views on abortion being from from the moment of conception (it is morally wrong at a later point), I like that she is clearly educated, and trying to distance ’40 Days of Life’ from groups in America that have committed terrorist acts.

  • Conorcrrll

40 days for life do not show any graphic pictures at all actually, you are confusing 40 days for life with Abort 67 which are separate and different organisations

  • scary goat

I remember being taught that love brings unity and evil causes division.  Evil is certainly doing well in the pro-choice movement.  Setting up division between mother and child strikes at the heart of everything. The right of the mother to choose about her own body? The right of the unborn child to life?  IN CONFLICT WITH EACH OTHER?????????? Where is love in this? Where is the natural bond between mother and child? How did this ever happen?  Sexual freedom? The unborn child is just an unwanted by-product? Why do people relate abortion to women’s rights?  Sexual freedom and abortion are removing women’s rights to be respected by men, and to be natural mothers in a stable family. I am not commenting about extreme cases where, for example, a pregnancy may be fatal for the mother, that is a more complex issue, but the vast numbers of convenience abortions. Where, oh where has this attitude come from that sex is some sort of right yet we are not responsible for the consequences?

  • scary goat

Also since when is pro- abortion/so-say women’s rights anything to do with men? Why  would a man be interested in promoting abortion rights? What’s the agenda here?

  • BTyler

    Ignorant troll.
