Pope joins Twitter

Vatican Pope Pallium

Pope Benedict XVI has become the latest religious leader to join Twitter.

The Holy Father, who will tweet as @pontifex on the social networking site, already has 75,000 followers, although he will not write anything until December 12, the feast day of Our Lady of Guadeloupe.

Although the 85-year-old pontiff will send the first tweet, it is understood that aides will handle the account. Only one computer in the Vatican’s secretariat of state will be used for the tweets to ensure the account is not hacked.

The tweets will be in English, Spanish, Italian, French Portuguese, German, Polish and Arabic.

The first tweet will be in response to a selected question under the #askpontifex hashtag, with the Vatican encouraging Twitter users to ask Pope Benedict questions.

Among the other handles the Vatican considered was @BenedictusPPXVI.

I have followed him, but he has not repaid the compliment.

    There will be words.

Thanks Holy Father…evangelize and spread the Gospel to the world through every available medium.

  • Fr. Thomas Poovathinkal

WELCOME to the representative of CHRIST THE LORD on earth.

  • Michelle Egan

Lets remind our Holy Father regularly on Twitter politely about the scandalous Soho Masses for sexual deviants, so that something is done about this sacrilege. God bless our Pope.

…how thoughtful of the Herald to offer His Holiness some advice on Twitter use and etiquette.
I await with relish next week’s article on childcare by King Herod.

  • Deodatus

I view Twitter and other such social media as actual and potentially developing evils destructive of natural human relationship and society – I am glad that His Holiness, by involving the Vatican in this way, may be a means of Grace to lessen this potential.
