Who can ever forget his black sweater beneath his cassock as HH Benedict approached the balcony. Notice the vigour despite his age then. Early on he indicated he was a transitional Pope, hinting modestly that the name he picked reflected that brief pontificate of his namesake predecessor. The whole “professorial” leaning showed what the pallium in the Petrine office really signifies, and as such he proved a great conservator, while ironically being also an innovator (ecclesiastical finances, etc.), including the creation of the Anglican Ordinariate. I think the secular progressive media tended to take snarky aims at him, or the Church for that matter, and that sort of attack is what one might expect from those who find Christian Truth disturbing to them. I think commentators are still at a loss as to what is his legacy: it is not the scandals that define such a legacy, but his steadfastness and response (cautious and restrained), rather than what some of his critics might have wanted. That is the Christly attitude reflected in this great man, and his response to the office he held.
