Pope Francis has used his Twitter account to appeal for prayers for the victims of a factory explosion in Texas.

Writing from his @pontifex account, the Pope said: “Please join me in praying for the victims of the explosion in Texas and their families.”

The explosion at a fertiliser plant in West, Texas, injured hundreds of people, with the number of deaths yet to be confirmed. Homes and buildings have been destroyed and some are on fire after the explosion at 00.50 (GMT)

Half the population of West, which is just north of Waco, have been evacuated for fear of further explosions.
