Bishop Alan Hopes was installed as the new Bishop of East Anglia yesterday at St John the Baptist Cathedral, Norwich.

The cathedral was at full capacity of nearly 2,000 people for the installment Mass as the 69-year-old became the fourth bishop of East Anglia.

The people of East Anglia had waited a long time for a new bishop, he said at the installation. He succeeds Bishop Michael Evans who died in July 2011.

Bishop Hopes served as a priest in the Church of England until 1994 when he was accepted into the Catholic Church. As a Catholic priest, he served in parishes in Kensington and Chelsea. In 2003, he was appointed as an Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Westminster.

The new bishop’s diocese includes the parishes of Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
