An English bishop has urged Catholics to reach out to those who no longer go to Mass.

In a video produced to mark this year’s Home Mission Sunday, Bishop Kieran Conry of Arundel and Brighton said that only one in five baptised Catholics attend church every Sunday. The other four have somehow lost contact with the Church.

Bishop Conry, chairman of the Bishops’ Conference Department for Evangelisation and Catechesis, said: “That’s why this year, for Home Mission Sunday, on September 15, we’ve chosen the theme of ‘crossing the threshold’ an outreach to non-church-going, lapsed Catholics.”

He asked viewers to help find out why people stop attending Mass and to encourage them to come back.

He also encouraged Catholics to pray on Home Mission Sunday for the work of the Department for Evangelisation and Catechesis.

“Help us welcome back those, many of whom are looking to find a way back, but don¹t know how to find it,” he said.
