Pope Francis has gained more than 20 million followers on Twitter.

His @Pontifex account on the social media site has versions in English, Spanish, Arabic, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese and Latin.

Other Twitter users with more than 20 million followers include US president Barack Obama and pop star Justin Bieber.

The account was launched during the pontificate of Benedict XVI on December 12 2012. Francis first tweeted on March 17 2013, when the account had 3.4 million followers.
