The winner of the prestigious prize will be announced in October

Pope Francis has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

US presidential hopeful Donald Trump has also been nominated for the award, as has German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

A record 376 nominations have been submitted this year. The head of the Nobel Institute, Olav Njolstad said that there were 228 individuals and 148 organisations had been nominated.

“We live in a world where there are a lot of conflicts and where there are also a certain number of processes that are heading in a more positive direction,” Njolstad said.

“Clearly, this has inspired a lot of people to exercise their right to nominate someone.”

The winner of the prize will be announced on October 7.

Pope Francis was nominated for last year’s prize but it went to four Tunisian groups that rescued the county’s transition to democracy.
