The US president's first foreign trip will incorporate a visit to the Vatican

Donald Trump will meet Pope Francis at the Vatican later this month.

The Vatican announced this afternoon: “His Holiness Pope Francis will receive the Hon. Donald Trump, President of the United States of America, on Wednesday, 24 May 2017, at 8:30 a.m. in the Apostolic Palace. President Trump will then meet with His Eminence Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State, and Archbishop Paul Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States.”

On Trump’s milestone first visit, he will also go to Israel and Saudi Arabia, as well as attending a NATO meeting in Brussels on May 25 and the G7 summit in Sicily the following day.

The two leaders have traded rhetorical blows in the past, but in January the Pope said it would be “reckless” to judge Trump before seeing what he does.
