Maybe the bishops should make an example of the President of the United States. Maybe they ought to name him and shame him as the Dissenter-in-Chief, the bully champion of his political party’s mad promotion of so-called “abortion rights” and insane addiction to the big cheques of the abortion interest. Perhaps they ought to excommunicate the lot of ’em. Maybe. It doesn't matter. They aren’t going to.

They voted by a three-to-one majority to authorize the drafting of a statement on “on the meaning of the Eucharist in the life of the Church.” It has been reported as having a single, simple political motivation, to bar pro-choice politicians

The American bishops have agreed to write a statement on whether pro-choice Catholic politicians may receive Communion. It's needed, though it will be toothless. But that's not the real issue, anymore. The problem is many of them now oppose the Church living by her principles, when those principles contradict Democratic party policy.
